To our champions, our bread-winners, our shoulders to cry on. To our constant and our main best friend, who is always there for us in both good times and in bad. To the real life superhero, whose courage, relentless hard work, and undying love universally and collectively fuel us, motivate us, and inspire us. They are nurses, and doctors, and health workers, and police and military officers on the frontline in the fight against this global pandemic. They are scientists and engineers on the cusp of breakthrough in discovering, manufacturing, and distributing COVID-19 vaccines. They are farmers and factory workers ensuring the supply chain of food. They are teachers and educators upholding the belief that education is a right and of utmost importance regardless of resources, and avenues, and money. They are journalists, and writers, and poets, and artists helping us navigate, understand, make sense, and hold a mirror up to what is happening in the world today. They are super housewives that put food on our tables, and keep everything in order. And sometimes they can even stand as fathers when there is none. They are our mothers. And we dedicate and celebrate this day to them – Mothers Day.
When we really think of it though, mother’s day should be celebrated every day. I mean, dedicating a single day for them out of the 365 (or 366) days of the year is the barest of minimum, and is nothing compared to the many contributions that our mothers have done and continually do for us and the world.
That being said, considering we are in home quarantine, here is a list of fun things to do and ways to celebrate with your mom at home.
1. Celebrate mother’s day by decorate your mom’s room
If there is one thing we can all agree on, it is that there is no better feeling in the world than a tight and clean bed sheet + a tidy room. Start the day by cleaning her room, and maybe do a little rearranging and refurbishing to revamp her comfort space. Hang and put up picture frames of family portraits of you and your mom, and maybe even place some indoor and air filtering plants in the corner or on the windowpane. Complement them with some scents and fragrances like candles and incense that your mother will like- think of roses, and lavender, and cinnamon, and citruses, and sweet spices! And while you’re at it, don’t forget to clean and tidy your room too, for that will surely be what she will appreciate the most!
2. Cook a family recipe/her favourite meal
All year round, the majority of mothers in the world are relegated to the kitchen and are in charge of all cooking duties in the household. On mother’s day, have her take a break, and volunteer to wear that hairnet and apron. Cook her favorite meal/childhood favorite which are always often a family recipe passed down from generation to generation. Cook and prepare something savory or sweet, and also ready some refreshments, which will surely fill your mother’s stomach and make her day. Hey, if all efforts fail, there’s always Food panda or Grab as backup, right?
3. Organize a movie night and watch a film/show together
Aren’t we all just a little too nostalgic about going to the movies? Well, I am sure that we will get to visit the theatres and watch major flicks on the big screen soon, but while cinemas are still closed, how about emulating the experience in the comfort of your own home? With popular streaming apps like Netflix readily available, enjoy the magical experience of watching movies with your mom. Films that depict and make an emphasis on mother-daughter/son relationships are encouraged. Think of: Freaky Friday, Brave, Lady Bird, Mamma Mia!, The Blind Side, etc. Grab some popcorns and laugh or cry or maybe even do both together.
4. DIY your way to a mother’s day gift
Gifts are nice, but gifts crafted with and by your own hands are even nicer. DIY gifts show how willing a person is to exert a little extra effort in preparing and giving someone a gift that would mean something special to them. And there should be no one better to receive that added thoughtfulness than your mother whose utmost priority has always been you since the day you were born. Beads, laces, ribbons, stamps, and wrappers will be your arts and crafts best friends on this DIY endeavour.
5. Celebrate mother’s day with an at-home spa service
On mother’s day, pamper your mothers with your very own at-home spa service. Douse her in essential body oils and soothing ointments that will level out her stress especially during this pandemic. Massage away her worries and her aches to the best of your ability, and let her know who is queen of the day. Do her manis and pedis while she’s sitting down, comfortable, with an organic face mask on.
With work and school taking up the majority of our lives, it is important to wind down, and spend a huge chunk of time dedicated specifically to your mother. Just that extra time alone spent together, I’m sure, will have a special place in her core memory and her heart that she will cherish forever.
Another way to show your love to your mother is to guarantee her security and comfort.
