Residents of Cavite will soon be able to commute directly to Metro Manila as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has already set the schedule for the opening of the LRT-1 Extension Project.
Being surrounded by neighboring provinces in the CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) region and in close proximity to the National Capital Region (NCR), Cavite has its advantages in terms of economic development. Specifically, it is located in the south of Manila Bay and southwest of Metro Manila, making it a strategic location for affordable house and lot developments and a hotspot for people to relocate.
Cavite has 7 districts, 23 cities and municipalities, and 829 barangays with an estimated population of 4,344,829 people. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority-National Statistics Office (PSA-NSO), Cavite is the most populous province and fastest-growing population in the country.
Since the population rises every year, housing remedies must be made available to everyone. Bria Homes saw this potential and have been progressive with its mass housing projects across the province and other key locations.
In line with this, Caviteños have been greatly affected by industrialization. Improvements in transport infrastructure have made the province more accessible and have also increased real estate prices in the area. The most recent is the Light Railway Transit-1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension, which aims to provide fast and safe journeys for suburban residents who commute daily to Metro Manila.
LRT-1 Cavite Extension
The P65-billion LRT-1 Cavite Extension is a joint endeavor by the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA).
The LMRC released a statement with GMA News regarding the first phase of the project, being 73 percent complete as of August 2022. The railway is expected to start partial operations in the first quarter of 2024 and the projected completion is by late 2023 or early 2025.
This 11.7-kilometer project covers five stations, namely Dr. Santos in Parañaque, Ninoy Aquino, PITX Asiaworld, MIA, and the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran.
LMRC expressed their optimism after the completion of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension phase 1 viaduct. A special engineering method was used to allow faster execution and minimal effect on ground-level traffic, which is a first for the Philippines.
The electromechanical works and construction of the stations are now in progress. This includes the installation of the electrical system, the laying of rail tracks, and the construction of the remaining three stations that are scheduled for completion this 2022.
The Long Journey for LRT-1
LRMC, the elevated railway operator, assumed the LRT-1 operations in 2015. They have invested almost P25 billion in the rehabilitation of the existing system and the LRT-1 extension update.
Recently, the LRT-1 upgraded to a new signaling system that facilitates the commercial use of the 4th generation trainsets and the connection of the existing line to the future system. There are sixteen new trainsets with each having a capacity of about 1,400 people. Before being deployed, the DOTr plans to conduct trial runs by 2023.
This project is now 22 years in the making, as it was first approved by the National Economic and Development Authority Investment Coordination Committee (NEDA ICC) in 2000.
Congress gave its first budget for the right-of-way acquisition in 2007, however, in June 2016, not a single train has been ordered and nothing was built. Additionally, the required right-of-way has not been certified by the project’s independent consultant and was at a dismal status.
On September 2019, it was given a “free and clear” certification, the actual construction was started, and the unresolved issues were addressed by the LMRC, DOTr, and LRTA.
Commuting from Cavite to Metro Manila
In simplest terms, the LRT-1 extension update is from the existing Baclaran station to the Niyog Station in Bacoor, Cavite, which extends the system to 32.4 kilometers. Once completed, it will reduce the travel time between Baclaran and Bacoor, Cavite from 1 hour and 10 minutes to only 25 minutes. It will also increase the passenger capacity from 500,000 to 800,000 daily.
This project will not only benefit residents from Cavite but also those from Southern Metro Manila and nearby areas. It is expected that future stations will also be integrated and connected with public transport terminals. Apart from the LRT-1 Cavite Extension, other existing infrastructures that connect Cavite to the rest of Luzon, include the Metro Star Ferry, Manila-Cavite Expressway (Cavitex), Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway (MCx), Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAx), the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEx) connector road.
